The Case Against DSK May Be About to Collapse

For once, the conspiracy-minded among us seem to be vindicated by the latest developments regarding the rape charges against former IMF president Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

As Reuters reports:

The sexual assault case against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was close to collapse on Friday, sources close to the case said, in a dramatic turnabout that could upend French politics again.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, was a steward of the world economy and a leading candidate for next year's French presidential election until he was arrested on May 14 and charged with the attempted rape and sexual abuse of a hotel maid in New York.

A source familiar with the probe told Reuters that prosecutors now had doubts about the maid's credibility as a witness.“

Some details about the witness have also emerged, which if true clearly would at a minimum serve to throw grave doubt on her allegations.

„From the start, the case hinged on the purported victim, a 32-year-old Guinean immigrant who cleaned the $3,000-a-night suite at the Sofitel hotel in Manhattan, where Strauss-Kahn was staying.

The New York Times quoted a source close to the investigation as saying the housekeeper had lied repeatedly and prosecutors no longer believed her account of the circumstances of the sexual encounter or of her own background.“

[…]

„The New York Times quoted two well-placed law enforcement officials as saying prosecutors had found issues with the accuser's asylum application and possible links to criminal activities, including drug dealing and money laundering.

They had also discovered that the woman had made a phone call to an incarcerated man within a day of her encounter with Strauss-Kahn in which she discussed the possible benefits of pursuing the charges against him, the paper said.

The conversation was recorded. The man was among a number of individuals who had made multiple cash deposits, totaling around $100,000, into the woman's bank account over the last two years, the New York Times said.“

One possibility is: someone who knew about Strauss-Kahn's  proclivities as a womanizer (which were apparently an 'open secret' in France)  tried to set him up with a 'honey trap'  to get rid of him – either as IMF chief or more likely, as a contender in the French presidential elections, which he was widely expected to win.

This set-up is now apparently about to fail because the woman used in its execution is proving too unreliable for such a plan. She evidently isn't a truly well-trained character assassin, otherwise she wouldn't have made the  mistake of calling up someone in the slammer on the phone to discuss the likely monetary benefits of sticking it to the well-endowed (with money) IMF chief.

Another possibility is: right at the beginning of the affair, DSK's attorneys announced that they would do everything to shake the credibility of the witness. They may simply have been able to create enough doubt about her to make her appear unreliable, even though her allegations are true. After all, even if the woman has a sordid past, this does not prove she wasn't raped by DSK.  Perhaps what we are seeing here is a fight between different strands of the Western power elite, the surface emanations of a struggle that remains well in the background.

Normally we would not post an article on such an event – although we'd probably mention it in passing. But this is a fascinating case, as it seems at least possible that a high-level conspiracy is about to unravel. Recall that from the very beginning, many people had grave doubts about the affair. If she was indeed hired by political opponents of DSK, the witness may have a lot more juicy details to reveal. It is of course just as likely that she merely wanted to make money by lodging an unfounded complaint – we will have to wait and see what comes of it.

As an interesting aside here, it is well known that Strauss-Kahn is a socialist, in the sense of 'social democrat', i.e., the strand of socialism that purports to represent the so-called 'third way' of the 'mixed economy' (the very system of welfare statism that is now about to implode in Europe). Alas, in his youth, as a student, he was a member of the 'Union des Etudiants Communistes' – a communist student organization.

You may have noticed that our so-called “semiannual” funding drive, which started sometime in the summer if memory serves, has seamlessly segued into the winter. In fact, the year is almost over! We assure you this is not merely evidence of our chutzpa; rather, it is indicative of the fact that ad income still needs to be supplemented in order to support upkeep of the site. Naturally, the traditional benefits that can be spontaneously triggered by donations to this site remain operative regardless of the season - ranging from a boost to general well-being/happiness (inter alia featuring improved sleep & appetite), children including you in their songs, up to the likely allotment of privileges in the afterlife, etc., etc., but the Christmas season is probably an especially propitious time to cross our palms with silver. A special thank you to all readers who have already chipped in, your generosity is greatly appreciated. Regardless of that, we are honored by everybody's readership and hope we have managed to add a little value to your life.
